The two boys had me puzzled. Friends since birth, they were from two families who had known each other for 10 years. Their parents loved God and loved each other. There seemed to be very little difference between their circumstances, but there was one looming difference in their lives. While they both were God-smart, only one was God-connected.

 

I would say they were two of the most God-smart kids I knew. They knew all about God and church. They could tell Bible stories backwards and forwards and were fantastic at memorising scripture. They knew all the songs at church, and even made up their own actions. They could say grace over any meal with ease. They were comfortable and confident in Christianity, but only one loved God and felt loved in return. His heart and mind were solidly God-connected. He knew how to share his life with God and how to seek and receive God’s words, comfort, guidance and truth. To this boy, God was real and active in the world and in his life, and he had a two-way dynamic relationship with him.

 

What puzzled me was how they could be so different when their circumstances were so similar…
